Question:
When I think of the greatest rock song, I usually come up with a top five, one for each decade from 1950’s to 1990’s, and although it usually changes a bit (my pick for the seventies is acutally ‘69) this is what it usually looks like. ’50’s Chuck Berry’s "Johnny Be Good" -come on this song is an anthem, let’s face it, nearly every group has covered it, and it never gets old ’60’s The Beatles "A day in the Life" -nothing before sounded like this, it revolutionized the way rock and roll could sound, and what could be done with music. Plus the ending was kind of disturbing and shocking at the time, and isn’t that what rock and roll is all about? ’70’s Led Zepplin "Stairway to Heaven"-okay it’s actually ‘69, but nuff said. ’80’s U2 "Where the Streets have no Name"-maybe I’m biased, but I think this was one of the few great "rock" songs of the ’80’s. But besides from that, this song just courses with energy, something else rock is all about. ’90’s Nirvana’s "Smells like teen Spirit"-I’m not a Nirvana fan, but just look at what this song did for music. It was dirty, energetic, loud, simple, and just great. Well, that’s my 2 cents worth. You can argue all you want, but you probobly won’t change my mind on most of those. Especially the first four. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – But I’d like to point out that the Floyd was pretty damn repetitive, too. Of course, their lyrics made SENSE. Can’t say so much for SotW. And I thought SOTW was one of purple’s songs which really did make sense. — Regards Roger Philosophy web site <URL: http://www.roga.demon.co.uk/

Can’t answer your second question, but the numbers, I believe, represent frets on the guitar. I’ve tried playing "Smoke On The Water" before. You play the exact same chord over and over, just on different frets. Interesting technique. He was illustrating the repetitiveness of it. I have heard it played in concert over many years by: Van Halen (First song they played together when Sammy Hagar joined), Led Zepplin (of course), RUSH (only part of it), Aero Smith, ACDC, Jefferson Airplane, Pat Benatar, INXS, Journey, Pat Travers Band, Queen, Triumph (jamming part), White Snake, Janis Joplin, Heart (OOOH, Barracuda) and Cheap Trick to name a few….. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -So…what I need are your suggestions. Uh… I really think you would need to focus the topic a bit more. Classic Rock? ANY former pop music? Hard rock? Rock & Roll? Depending on what TYPE of music you’re aiming for, my answer would range from American Pie to Closing Time (Cohen, not that shit out now) to Low Spark of HH Boys to Sultans of Swing to several by PF… et. al., etc., etc., ad nauseum, e plurbius anno domini. Just asking for the greatest rock song of all time is kinda meaningless, I think. I mean, in terms of what? Even if not meaningless, it’ll still be too damn hard to do. Judging by the category of music in which fall the two you mentioned, I’d have to suggest Who Are You, Layla, & Low Spark, just to name a few off the top o’ the grape.
