U2 – Oz charts

Question:

    2000: AMERICAN PIE – Madonna

What I want to know is how did that do so well?  It is just a poor mix of a classic song!

Response:

Hey, I’m new to this NG, and I thought I would just post something that was posted to the aus.music NG.  In the last 12 years in Australia, there have been 12 songs debut at #1.  And there is only one band that have more than one song in this list.  Guess who? ;)  And the Best of 1980-1990 album keeps popping in and out of the top 40 albums as well.  This week it’s sitting at #50 after 64 weeks in the chart.  U2 rocks OZ! For anyone who is interested here is the full list – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  The list of all the number debuts from the   last 12 years are listed below.     1991: THE FLY – U2     1993: I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT) – Meatloaf     1995: HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME – U2     1996: JESUS TO A CHILD – George Michael           UNTIL IT SLEEPS – Metallica           KILLING ME SOFTLY – Fugees     1997: FREAK – Silverchair           MMM BOP – Hanson     2000: AMERICAN PIE – Madonna           BYE BYE BYE – ‘N Sync           POISON – Bardot           WHO THE HELL ARE YOU – Madison Avenue
