How could anyone like a band who’s singer hasn’t washed his hair in 15 years, and yet he’s *still* a conceited pompus asshole. I love these searches.  Just for the a.g.a. folks: Any of the major search engines.  Search for "I hate U2" http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=I+hate+U2&btnG=Google+Search This is the website that comes up with Google’s "I feel Lucky Search": http://www.bullymag.com/6.6.02/u2-060802.asp On that webpage: "One More Reason To Hate U2: Corporate Sellouts By Ken Wohlrob We here at Bully have never bought the bullshit thrown at us by the likes of MTV, VH-1 and Rolling Stone about how great U2 are. Probably because for the most part, U2 is really a bad 80s band that never should have become as popular as they did. But they were easy to market, after all they made poppy little diddies that sent college kids into a tizzy and gave pseudo-intellectuals a new hero to rave about. Quite frankly, Henry Rollins was dead-on when he said, "The Clash is what U2 really wanted to be." They were a pseudo-political band who ultimately gave in to smart business sense. Case in point: U2, the supposed band of integrity and protest, recently decided to screw over independent record retailers, by signing an exclusive contract with the Best Buy, the 1,900-store consumer electronics and appliance monolith. According to the terms of the agreement, Best Buy would have a two-week exclusive to sell a brand new U2 live DVD for $18 and also get the rights to sell an out-of-print U2 Greatest Hits Album. In exchange Best Buy will help to promote a broadcast of the concert on DirectTV’s Freeview Event series for paying customers and spend up to $10 million promoting U2 through transit bus and newspaper advertising. So while Bono was all over CNN talking about helping to restore the economies in Africa, he and his mates had already screwed thousands of small music retailers who would lose revenue and customers to a large chain that is expected to rack up $20 billion in 2002. In 2000, Best Buy bought out the Musicland Chain, which runs Sam Goody here in the States, and more recently bought the 83-store Future Shop chain in Canada. For all intents and purposes, they are quickly becoming the Starbucks of the consumer electronics world – a store in every town, sometimes even two or three if necessary. To make matters worse, Best Buy expanded in the music distribution business by creating Redline Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary that acts like any other record label. One catch, by silently owning Redline, other chains and music retailers are padding Best Buy’s pockets by selling CD’s from Redline’s artists. To quote Best Buy’s CEO from a brief article in Forbes (about the only publication to cover the story): "Consumers are telling us they want to depend increasingly on one guy." The Babbitizing of America continues

Surely this "pairs" thing is not a helpful way of determining the "weakest link". Like you said at the beginning, sometimes there will be really difficult choices to make, either between songs you really like, or songs you dislike equally. If you really wanted to find out the most unpopular song, why not just have a straight vote? Everybody says their least favourite song and you just see what gets the most votes? Maybe you should try that next, and see if you get the same result or not. – Annie Vox :o )

album.  I noticed that the remaining songs are heavily skewed towards Boy & October (7/13), and this got me wondering:  is that because the majority of NG peeps are younger (i.e. weren’t old enough to be music fans in 1981) and thus slightly favor the newer stuff or because Boy and October just aren’t as good?  (My guess is the former for Boy and the latter for October.)

As one of those "younger NG peeps" (Boy is older than I am, but October isn’t), I’ve been dismayed at the number of Boy tracks that have made it to the later rounds.  I’ve never disliked Boy; I never really discovered it until about a year ago, and now its among my favorite U2 albums.  (As a rough ordering, AB is by far the favorite, followed by Pop, with JT and Boy jockeying for the bronze…)  It definitely lacks the skill and polish that the later (UF onwards) albums show (it took me all of one listen to learn the bass lines to half the songs on Boy), but the talent is definitely there, and there’s a certain raw energy to it that I’m not able to hear in anything since then. So I’m guessing that if all of the folks on the NG were to give Boy a few listens, and then we repeated this lil’ exercise, there wouldn’t be nearly as many Boy tracks left.  October, on the other hand… — U2 Code: NO+++ FA+++ S++$ N B+ C L+++X O+ CV+++ AB10/11

The Playboy Mansion A Day Without Me Scarlet Red Light The Ocean Miami btw, I’m ashamed you people voted out Babyface and When Love Comes to Town (although the voting was close).  For me, these are the two weakest links. In my opinion, not only are they the worst U2 songs, they are just terrible songs in general.  But whatever.  And how the heck is Some Days Are Better Than Others still on here?  Why do people on this group dislike that song? I think it’s pretty good, one of only three from Zooropa that I actually really like.

Well, I can’t believe ‘Peace On Earth’ is on the remaining thirteen. To me this is the most emotional, memorable song on ATYCLB. You can hear the underlying anger, pain, and bitterness in Bono’s voice when he is reciting names of some of the Omagh bombing victims and when speaking directly to God in lines like ‘She never got to say goodbye, to see the color in his eyes, now he’s in the dirt. That’s peace on earth.’ I really think that those of you who actually think this is one of the worst songs U2 has ever done need to go and listen to it again. No you can’t dance to ‘Peace On Earth’ and it’s not a makeout song. No, it’s just quintessential U2; raw, emotional, heartbreaking, memorable.

It would be interesting to see what 13 songs would be left in round four if the pairings in previous rounds were (randomly) changed.  Almost certainly not the same ones, and Snowlock, that’s probably why SDABTO stuck around so long.  It likely just had some stiff competition. From the song "Doors" by Bruce McCollough (One of the Kids in the Hall) Refers to the doors, but still valid, and funny :) "And if you want to be a Doors fan, don’t just go buy a greatest hits album. Greatest Hits albums are for housewives and little girls. You want to be a Doors fan, you gotta do it right. It’s very scientific. You gotta buy Waiting For The Sun. It’s their third album, but really it’s their first. We call it the departure point."

I really do like the song, I like the electrics, I like the lyrics, i love the drumming, but it may be a little off with the SHE IS A REFUGE solid type singing by bono. and the arragement just shows another innovative U2 in the making. and maybe the woaaaaaa woooooooooooaaaaaaaaa may throw u off a bit, but it fits the song, oh well im done analyzing i really have nothing to say. z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z z

Question:

AAAAHHHH I sure hope this isn’t all of U2 fans, someone please remind me that not every U2 fan has accsess to this U2 news group.

Response:

I’m a huge, giant, big, big, BIG lover of U2 music, but I didn’t know this NG existed. I also feel I am too freaking old to be in here with everybody else. In the McCartney NG I mention U2 a LOT!!!!  I’m also a big fan of the Blues, so I love "When Love Comes To Town", but my favorite song that hits right into my soul and heart is "One". I’d love to know the story behind that song. It feels like it could have been me that wrote that and sings that, that’s how in tune I am with that song. I am a professional writer (fiction books), but I have a degree in and have taught, instrumental and vocal music. Does anybody know the story behind the song "One"?  I’d love to hear it.

Ooooh.  If someone does know the real kind, please post it up for all of us.  My friend Keith and I usually buy Swisher Sweets, which aren’t a great smoke, truth be told, but look good.  Hell, any kinda cigarillo will do it, yeah?  You’re just going for the look anyway… Ah, man…now I’ve got that stupid "just bite it…jess for the look, I don’t light it" part of Gettin’ Jiggy With It stuck in my brain.  If y’all will excuse me, I’m gonna go put a bullet in my brain…it’s the only known surefire one-hundred-percent cure I know… :) Todd McGillivray – TIP#467 – The_Rev on IRC http://members.tripod.com/~cplhicks/ Mailing me?  toddmc at nbnet dot nb dot ca.
