Is it true that Americans have hang-ups about wanking, not being funny, but a friend said they do. Wanking (funny way to put it) isn’t cool until the mid 20s.  Up and till then, men will be teased for beating off.  My friends were a little more mature about things when I was in highschool.  We talked like – Couldn’t sleep at all last night waiting for the exam results…beat off a dozen times and still couldn’t Something to that extent.

CMF, Sorry to disappoint, dude, but i am not borg. I clarify this point more for Michelle’s sake than for mine – whereas i wouldn’t mind having her stuff attributed to me (i think what she writes is beautiful), somehow i don’t think she would like my stuff attributed to her. It is ironic that a thread that started with the lament, "the world is complete without me" should first of all get semi-hijacked by two people not so subtly calling me a wanker, and then i should get mistaken for someone else.  Nevermind the world, my own threads get by without me. The "fonkmish" email addy is a Spoonerism of "monkfish" – some other scumbag had beaten me to monkf…@hotmail.com (who shall now get spammed, heheheh). You are an obsessive little git, aincha? When you love someone: 1. You want them to love you back. 2. You care about what they’re thinking. 3. etc…. so if you love someone you try to ‘eat them’? You have a very strange idea of love ilya. Love is respectful of the other, embracing him/her as an unknown that stands apart from you. It doesn’t appropriate.

Loving someoen means wanting them to be happy with *or without you*. Anythign else is "being possessive" and "wantign to own someone". Wanting them to love you back then can only mean hoping they too want you happy with *or without them*.  >  > — > Cujo – The Official Overseer of Kooks and Trolls in > dfw.*, alt.paranormal, alt.astrology and alt.astrology.metapsych. > Winner of the 8/2000 & 2/2003 HL&S award. The Latins avoid this argument by having two verbs for "to love". "Querer" for kids, parents and spouses (it translates as both "love" and "want", according to context) and "amar" for lovers, gods and goddesses. Keeps things nice and clear.

Response:

When you love someone, you want to make her your own. When you love someone completely, you want to make everything she is a part of you. Her character, her inspiration, her goodness, her passion, even her pain, you want to live in you and become permanent part of you, even if for one or another reason you cannot be together. If you are having trouble with empathy, there is a way to learn it. It comes from putting yourself into similar situations that the person you love has experienced and feel the different things she felt directly. I found that doing it for one person made it easier to do this for others. If you are serving God, He will not put you into situations that you cannot handle. He will put you into situations in which you are challenged, made to develop wisdom and strength, made to see things that you’d never seen before – but you will grow as a result. My parents tried to protect me from life. I’ve learned that that is a very bad idea. First, it prevents you from seeing the world and the way other people live. Second, it weakens you, making you addicted to comforts and unable to make it in any other environment than the one in which you are raised. And third, it makes it harder, while being warm, to understand someone who’s cold. I’ve chosen to confront this circumstance of my upbringing head on. I have sought out ideas and environments different from one in which I’ve been raised. I’ve deliberately decided to strengthen myself, in order that I can be free and not bound by the strangulating, emotionally blackmailing, enslaving covenants that shut out life in its richness and wisdom. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliffe basically murdered his son with fake kindness, making him weak. I determined that this would not happen to me, nor if I ever have children would I do such a thing to them. A follower of Layo’s guru Adano used to say, "Don’t play in the dark, or you’ll find someone who lives in the dark." A woman who used to post on this newsgroup did just that with a man from Germany, and she grew in her understanding and strength as a result of the experience. If you are sheltered or coddled and want to develop the qualities necessary to break away and have liberty, playing in the dark, while asking God to protect you, will do the job. I have had a blessed life. When Layo came to live with me, all her I Ching readings said that I had divine protection. The divine protection, in my estimation, slipped only once, when I got in Tucson in battle of wills with an occultist, and that night I got attacked by three teenagers and had a bottle of Yegermeister broken against my head. I went back to sleep at the same table, reasoning that the best response to stupidity is no response at all – pretending essentially that it did not happen & going on with one’s life as before. I did not learn from the experience that I should not engage myself with occultists in battles of wills or sleep outside or go homeless. What I learned instead is that I can face a hundred idiots with bottles of Yegermeister and come out just as I had been before. I refuse to learn false lessons, or artificially designed & overbearingly shoved down one’s throat lessongs, or lessons that are invalid and imprisoning. Instead I learn the opposite lesson: That I can proceed undaunted in face of social idiocy and evil people and triumph over them for as long as I have the Lord. This lesson has also been manifest through situations into which I’ve deliberately put myself recently in order to understand someone I cared about. Yes you get challenged; yes you are exposed to difficult energies. You also grow in strength, compassion and understanding. Just for the record, I called last year a Navy recruitment center. They would not accept me because of my suicide attempt history, but I’ve been doing things regardless to toughen myself up. I’ve also experienced peace and beauty that passes all understanding. And that is a greater gift than anything that exists in the coddled environment in which I have been raised. I just said I like REM (some of it) I’m not any band’s fan, if someone produces a song or music worth listening to I’ll say I like it but I won’t go out and buy the album and T-Shirt. I’ve never much liked the commercial side of the music industry – I just switched on the TV a short while ago and there was a this group of females (the usual spread: black, white, asian, blonde, one with attitude)… I found it very dispiriting that the music industry (from that display) seems to have regressed and is clinging on to the spice-girl-boy-band crap that infested the last 10 years. In comparison to the crap that gets pumped out on the airwaves by boy/girl bands and rap crap I will agree that U2 are a brilliant band. It’s sad to think that the last good band could have been U2.

I remember in junior high school, Bono was actually thought of as hot and sexy by all the 12-14 year old girls. Can you imagine something happening like that now? Can you imagine that age set these days ever listening to an album like The Joshua Tree? Highly, highly unlikely. They also liked Dave Gahan and Martin Gore….."Violator" was also big.

It’s taken from the Best of 80-90 video. And have you seen the VHS of the UF collection? How does this BAD video

I actually used to do this a lot with my ex-gf.  We would just drive for hours, like I said, no destination in mind.  I remember this one time we were driving north on the 405 and I was like, hey let’s get off on Mulholland Dr. and see where it goes.  Mulholland Dr. is this (semi) famous street that runs along the Santa Monica Hills that separate the San Fernando Valley from the Los Angeles Basin.  If you look to one side you can see the Valley, turn to the other and you can see the sprawling grid of lights that makes up L.A.  It’s quite lovely.  A lot of famous movie stars such as Jack Nicholson and such live up there. Something about the intimate, closed confines of the automobile really makes it easy to get really close to another person.  She later agreed to come with me on a road trip to San Francisco, a drive of about 8 hours one way. We spent our spring break up there together, and it was one of the happiest times in my life.

i used to do that with one of my favorite people ever as well… we’d just drive around until we were done, usually a long time after, listening to the radio, talking about stuff that didn’t matter… he’d smoke and change the radiostations and talk about work and i’d just sit there and listen and feel like my head was going to explode because i was so happy… whatever :) >Something about the intimate, closed confines of the automobile really makes >it easy to get really close to another person.  She later agreed to come >with me on a road trip to San Francisco, a drive of about 8 hours one way. >We spent our spring break up there together, and it was one of the happiest >times in my life.

On a fretted instrument, the metal fret against which the string is pressed provides a clean fixed proper boundary for the string. This gives a nice clean sustained tone at every fret. A fretless bass on the other hand just relies on your finger pressing the string against the fongerboad to adjust the length and hence the pitch. The difference is that unlike a fret which is raised and provides a nice fixed point for the end of the string, on a fretless the string comes into the fingerboard at a low angle. Therefore, at your finger the string is sort of buzzing against the fongerboad. This buzzing gives a unique sort of sound which bass players have used the descriptive term "mwah" to describe. That is because the word sort of sounds like the sound you get. That’s it. Benj — Due to SPAM innundation above address is turned off!

Now, I don’t play a fretless but… I’m not sure that "mwah…" as I understand it is exclusive to that instrument.  The MP3’s above are probably the best examples, but in an attempt to point to specific popularly known scores I would say try the chorus from U2’s "With or Without You" where it slides from G to D on the E string, and D to A on the A from the intro to "Charlie Don’t Surf" (Clash).  This is all done (inexpertly in my reproduction) with regular roundwound strings on a conventional fretted instrument, but nonetheless has that er..  mwah quality that the bass uniquely can produce. Thank you, thank you, that was my misguided and ultimately futile attempt to define the indefinable.  The question needed asking, though.
