I want my MTV !!!

Question:

Back in 1981 a wonderful thing happened. I graduated from High School and " The Bugaloos " sang " Video Killed the Radio Star " The Buggles, BTW.

ha ha ha ha – your right, the Bugaloos were a Sat morning live like cartoon show, lol oh well, I stand corrected And at the beginning of this post, you seem to be saying that you were hooked from the beginning, that you liked the outside-the-U.S.-mainstream stuff MTV presented.

Thats true, and I agree most of my choices are mainstream except for Til Tuesday, but you must agree that after awhile MTV made the radio sit up and listen. Most of the big hit videos became the big hit songs as well. Would " Mickey" really have been a hit ? I remember the 80’s BIG hair days, hahahaha ! My husband loves the 80 rock bands, personally, they are posers to me. (Well, that and any music made by/aimed at black people as well, but that’s a separate discussion)

this sentence sounds as if i am being racist, thats not the case, i just hate rap. I don’t care who does it. Even is Stevie Nicks did a rap song, I would hate that. demographics and the fact that MTV sold out is the reason I am not pleased. I agree totally with you. Money talks, but I am not listening. My 15 yr old who is into the SCREAM stuff ( Sevendust, Garbage, etc ) gets very upset with MTV, he claims there are 10 rap songs to 1 of his songs played. I had to laugh, I never see any of mine unless they are doing an old timers special ;) . Don’t get me wrong, I can rock like the next person ( REAL ROCK, Aerosmith, Rush, Alanis, Melissa etc), *That’s* real rock? (in the mood to stir up trouble, hehe)

HEY NOW !! Aerosmith is the only band that has truly held it together for as long as they have been together. They don’t look like fools on stage, in fact, since they have gone straight, they actually look better.Steve can steal belt out a scream like no other. Keith Richards looks like he died 20 yrs ago, Charlie Watts looks like my great grandfather. They need to STOP having, we are all done, our last yr tours, they were done yrs ago. Your just mad cause I asked if you liked to wear womens clothes, yesterday :P rc <– Sorry Chris, I was just kidding around and never meant to offend you.      Since I’ve been home on break my afternoons have been dominated by Comedy Central–      12: The Daily Show

Sometimes I think "The Daily Show" has dominated my life. "Dog on Fire" goes through my head constantly, even when I’m not watching the show. Then again, I’ve always been a huge Bob Mould fan. But every time I hear a news story from some other source, I wait for Jon to put his 2 cents in…then realize "TDS" is not on & wonder if I’m losing my mind. And I went to 2 tapings last year & had a blast each time, so of course I often reflect fondly upon those days…      woowoowoo good stuff. On a related note, the South Park movie, which I just saw this week, has warped my fragile little mind. I’ve been going around singing all kinds of unsavory things under my breath the last couple of days.

I saw it the day it hit the theatres & had "Uncle F**ka" going through my head CONSTANTLY the next day. Did this happen to you? Mary * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

[ SPOILER - STRONG PERSONAL OPINIONS BELOW ] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I’m serious. . . . . . . . . . . There’s, like, this *huge* cognitive dissonance in this post. Back in 1981 a wonderful thing happened. I graduated from High School and " The Bugaloos " sang " Video Killed the Radio Star "

The Buggles, BTW. thus introducing MTV to the world. I was hooked. I would sit and watch for hours and hours. Some of my all time fav Videos 1. Journey : "Faithfully" 2. Fleetwood Mac : "Gypsy" 3. Til’ Tuesday : "Voices Carry" 4. Def Leppard : " Hysteria " 5. Bruce Springsteen : " Philadelphia" 6. U2 : " With or Without You " 7. The Police : " Every Breathe You Take "

And here’s the cognitive dissonance, at least for me.  Apart from the obvious difference of it being *video*, what made MTV so cool when it first started, for me anyway, was that the music was stuff that wasn’t being played on mainstream radio.  You couldn’t turn on your local AOR-format radio station and hear "Video Killed The Radio Star."  And at the beginning of this post, you seem to be saying that you were hooked from the beginning, that you liked the outside-the-U.S.-mainstream stuff MTV presented. But the favorites you’ve listed here, with one real exception, are basic mainstream fare.  They’re exactly what MTV was originally created to *rebel against*.  (Well, that and any music made by/aimed at black people as well, but that’s a separate discussion)  Eventually, that changed — radical ideas that threaten institutions end up becoming institutions.  So MTV became just as tired as the radio formats it challenged when it first went on the air, showing arena rockers and hair bands — the same stuff you could hear on any radio station. But that wasn’t how it started. I put it on now and I don’t know what happenned and when ?? Sure, I watch Real World every now and then , but for gosh sakes , where is the music ??? If they aren’t showing a rap video , then they are showing a bunch of guys screaming something that has to be beeped out every other phrase.

By any objective (e.g. academic) standard, rap is certainly music; it’s just not music you like.  Which is fine; we all have our tastes.  But for nearly every year since 1991, more money annually has been spent on rap music recordings than any other genre of music.  MTV is doing what all businesses do; they’re concentrating on where the money is. Don’t get me wrong, I can rock like the next person ( REAL ROCK, Aerosmith, Rush, Alanis, Melissa etc),

*That’s* real rock? (in the mood to stir up trouble, hehe) I get a kick out of this Kid Rock person, and I like Matchbox 20, but I am sorry, I can’t deal with rap over and over and over again, and how many boob jobs is Mariah Carey going to have ??

Kid Rock is an imposter.  And on a wonderful blues show I was listening to on Champaign’s community radio station one afternoon, I heard the D.J. (trying to raise money for the station) say, "WEFT — where we don’t play bands like Matchbox 20."  I laughed and laughed.  As for Mariah Carey . . . ugh.

I’m getting the impression that what you mostly want is a video channel showing so-called "classic rock" videos.  I’m pretty sure such channels exist on DSS — I think I saw one on a friend’s Primestar system. -c — Chris Metzler                   Work Address:   Harvard-Smithsonian Center 617-496-3259 (office)                              for Astrophysics (remove "snip-me." to email, of course)               Cambridge, MA  02138 USA "And radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools / Tryin’ to anesthetize the way that you feel!" — Elvis Costello, "Radio Radio"

I love her, I hate her, I love her, i hate her…

I tried watching VH-1. Occasionally, between Behind The Music and Where Are They Now, videos are seen. But sheesh, if I see Lenny Kravitz’s snoot one more time so help me… I understand Much Music in Canada actually shows videos. What a novel approach. Ed

Whatever happened to Matchbox 20? I remember hearing one song of theirs constantly, & that was that. Kid Rock’s cool, though. I used to love "120 Minutes" & Elvira’s Halloween specials, but I haven’t had the urge to watch MTV in years. In many ways, MTV can be credited for breaking U2 into the mainstream in this country, with their heavy rotation of videos like "I Will Follow" and "Two Hearts Beat As One."

Just wanted to mention I loved U2, then when they tried to stay away from their "political persona " , I don’t know, to me their music went sour, I have every U2 cd, stopping at Joshua Tree Def Leppard and Bon Jovi.  Bye bye MTV.  Thus they became what they rebelled against.

Have you seen VH-1’s Big Hair Rock Bands Behind the Music ?? Cracks me up No no no, sorry for the confusion.  Not you —

ok , cool :) For most of the 80’s, MTV was *very* segregationists, even racist, in its programming.  That’s what I was calling a separate discussion.

Now it seems just the opposite, well, wait maybe not, thare are still the I am young blonde and have big boobs singers ( Britney  and Christina ) and the ever so popular Manufactured Boy Bands. eeeewww. _, there’s still a zillion bands I’d think of as "real rock" before them.

I am not disagreeing, interested ,like who ? Led Zepplin, Doors, etc ?? bands like that ?  Walk This Way" with Run-DMC, SHHHHHHH, don’t ever mention that they did that again !!! ;) Alanis Morrissette,

she interests me cause she says what I have wanted to say , sometimes. The Tiffany thing is a riot though ! :) If by "Melissa" you meant Melissa Etheridge, she’s the one on that list who comes closest to "real rock" (in the sense of playing music that captures the ideals of rock’n'roll rebels from 40 years ago and more)

There is only 1 Melissa and you are right . I would say Melissa and Stevie Nicks have to be my all time favs..personal opinion My reason for liking Stevie is she never sold out, she never changed her image, though was pressed to do so. She stayed feminine because it is who she is. She wanted to be a singer/songwriter in the POP world and she did it. She didn’t take herself so seriously that she was embarassed to sing pop. Heh.  RC, you haven’t offended me at all.  I haven’t commented in that thread because I haven’t *seen* it on my crappy news server.  Others have told me about it so I know it’s there, but I can’t see it.  I have to come over here to another site I have an account on (University of Chicago) to see it.

And at the beginning of this post, you seem to be saying that you were hooked from the beginning, that you liked the outside-the-U.S.-mainstream stuff MTV presented. Thats true, and I agree most of my choices are mainstream except for Til Tuesday, but you must agree that after awhile MTV made the radio sit up and listen. Absolutely.  In many ways, MTV can be credited for breaking U2 into the mainstream in this country, with their heavy rotation of videos like "I Will Follow" and "Two Hearts Beat As One."  But in the end, the success of the out-of-the-mainstream bands MTV pushed only served to doom MTV.  They got a taste of the big money and liked it.  And once that happened, they became more beholden to the bands that the record companies wanted to push.  And the bands the record companies wanted to push were bands like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi.  Bye bye MTV.  Thus they became what they rebelled against. (Well, that and any music made by/aimed at black people as well, but that’s a separate discussion) this sentence sounds as if i am being racist, thats not the case, i just hate rap. I don’t care who does it. Even is Stevie Nicks did a rap song, I would hate that.

No no no, sorry for the confusion.  Not you — MTV.  For most of the 80’s, MTV was *very* segregationists, even racist, in its programming.  That’s what I was calling a separate discussion. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Don’t get me wrong, I can rock like the next person ( REAL ROCK, Aerosmith, Rush, Alanis, Melissa etc), *That’s* real rock? See, from this exchange, you probably think that I hate Aerosmith, when in fact I own ten or twelve Aerosmith discs and will always have a huge, very special fondness for _Rocks_, their best album IMHO and one of the best 70’s hard rock albums.  But even though I like them and even though I adore _Rocks_, there’s still a zillion bands I’d think of as "real rock" before them. It’s interesting, too, that you pick Aerosmith, since while they have indeed been around for a long time, their career was completely dead and they looked like they were done for good when they suddently got a burst of new life in the mid-80’s and their career turned around.  And where did that burst of life come from?  From a collaboration with . . . a rap group!  Seriously, if it weren’t for the success of their remake of "Walk This Way" with Run-DMC, Aerosmith wouldn’t have been back to do songs like "Janie’s Got A Gun" and all that. But my comment — "that’s real rock?" — was more aimed at the other choices on your list.  Personal opinion:  I don’t think of what either Rush, or the made-over Tiffany-soundalike Alanis Morrissette, do as rock’n'roll.  If by "Melissa" you meant Melissa Etheridge, she’s the one on that list who comes closest to "real rock" (in the sense of playing music that captures the ideals of rock’n'roll rebels from 40 years ago and more) at times, IMHO.
