Something I hope they don't do on the new album

Question:

With or Without You on the Joshua Tree works great with a fade but live (like in Mexico) it worked great with an ending.  I think I like the fade better.  But I agree, too many fades on one album is a little much. : :  Don’t fade the tracks! If there is one thing I don’t like about POP is the : fact that almost all the tracks fade out. I really hope they don’t do that : again. Y’know, I never though of that – trying to think how many U2 song just fade out… Its a cop-out way of ending a song IMO – though as with all things in life there would be exceptions. : :  A petty whinge I know. But one I have to make. No, its a very good point. Homer J — Fix email addy before sending…

ditto for me, altho some songs are best served by a fade… i think the perfect example is "hey jude" by the beatles. imagine if that stopped abruptly. that would be criminal! the best u2 fade in my book would be "dirty day." sounds like a horse galloping off into the distance… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Don’t fade the tracks! Response:

That’s the first time I read that about POP.  That is interesting, it’s like they didn’t know how to end that many songs!  Kind of like some movies, where the ending doesn’t really mean anything, they just needed an ending to tell you it was the end.

But GBHF and Stateless end on terrific notes.  Both good songs.

Response:

I agree.  I’ve always seen the "fade out" as the way to end a song when you don’t know how to end it!

Now and then it works. Example: Hey Jude. I like the thought of that refrain going on for another eight or nine hours.

Response:

Collective Soul was the first band to show me the non-fade, bluntly infact. Those guitars charging through and ending an a silence at a moments notice. Truly amazing. I don’t prefer one over the other when it comes to fading. It’s all good.
